Thoughts

Up and down. Up and down. Up and down. She continued to hit the buttons in the elevator, as she tried to focus her thoughts. Ma was gone. She shuddered. Now, Dan would be leaving soon to go to her funeral. Up and down. Up and down. Up and down. She could hear rushing water. Up and down. Up and down. Up and down. She felt split between the elevator and reality. She was walking through the courtyard, going to class, going to lunch. All of the daily things she needed to do, but still the elevator moved. Up and down. Up and down. Up and down. She wanted to scream, but suddenly, something stopped her. A hand gripped her shoulder. Not a real hand, no. This was internal, and the voice that spoke to was quiet but firm.
“Stop this. You have work to do.” She breathed slowly and focused her thoughts. She did indeed have work to do, so she went to class, and tried, mostly successfully to get on with what needed to be done. There would be time for tears later.
